About

Nourish is a telenutrition platform that connects people with registered dietitians covered by their insurance. Since its founding in 2021, Nourish has raised $44M in funding, amassed 1,000+ five-star reviews, and served tens of thousands of patients across the US.

Challenge

After outgrowing its PEO, Nourish wanted an HRIS solution that could accommodate its rapidly scaling, multi-state workforce

Nourish boasts an impressive — and fast-growing — workforce of 1,500+ employees scattered across all fifty states. Prior to scale, Nourish relied on a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) to meet their HRIS needs. But the PEO model is designed for small businesses, and, as Nourish’s employee base expanded across the country, the functional limitations and restrictions on their technology led to more manual HR processes. Plus, the model threatened to get more expensive over time.

So Senior People and Talent Manager Leah Nida decided it was time for a system overhaul. While she needed a solution fast, Leah also knew she’d have to think carefully. Could she jump to the first shiny platform, promising they were the best? Probably. But she had a hunch that an all-in-one solution might not be the best fit for Nourish’s diverse team.

To gut-check her suspicion and secure stakeholder buy-in, Leah needed an impartial view of the entire HR software landscape. Navigating the vast range of HRIS information out there — plus disentangling from the PEO relationship — would be a heavy lift for her nimble team, so she decided to look for a broker.

When Leah heard of a vendor-agnostic HR software broker who knows the space intimately, she was in. And that’s when she connected with OutSail.

“When you’re transitioning off a PEO, there are so many decisions to make and puzzle pieces to fit together — not just finding a new HRIS but also designing new benefit programs and ensuring compliance as you bring HR in-house. We picked OutSail because we knew they would help us step back, take the blinders off, and really understand our options.”

Solution

OutSail empowered Nourish to seamlessly part ways with its PEO and find the best fit fast

In less than a week, OutSail had already turned around a shortlist of vendors tailored to meet Nourish’s requirements. While the shortlist included many popular out-of-the-box solutions, it also offered several specialized options that piqued Leah’s interest.

After Leah’s team reviewed each tool across pricing, size match, and scalability, OutSail got to work collecting proposals and scheduling demos with the top candidates.

Leah says OutSail’s extensive knowledge and industry clout helped her squeeze more value out of every vendor interaction. Not only did OutSail share productive questions to ask before meetings, but they leveraged their vendor relationships to ensure she received bespoke service. As a result, she was able to compare options without information overload.

This clarity ultimately gave Leah — with the full support of her executive team — the conviction to forgo the flashy all-in-one platforms in favor of a best-of-breed approach. In the end, Nourish went with four vendors: one for payroll, benefits, employee engagement, and recruitment.

Even better? The whole process, from evaluation to implementation, took Leah’s lean team just six months. Thanks to the benefits broker and fractional HR firm that OutSail connected them with, they enjoyed the most efficient PEO exit and new vendor implementation process. And, with their HR function now officially in-house, Leah’s team is able to customize their tech to Nourish’s geographically diverse employee base and automate previously manual processes — while cutting costs no less.

“OutSail used their connections to get us premium service from the vendors we demoed with. When it was time to commit, they helped us secure some pretty sweet arrangements with the four we ended up picking, including access to our payroll vendor’s highest levels of service at the entry-level price point.”

Results

OutSail implemented four best-fit HRIS vendors to carry them through every stage of scale

Leah’s decision to back up her instincts with a broker paid off. Using OutSail, Nourish saved money, made confident selections, and quickly implemented a tailor-fit HRIS system that will grow with their company.

The results?

  • 75% reduction in administration fees
  • 1,500 employees at time of PEO exit
  • 1 full-time HR staff member
  • 67% less headcount vs typical PEO exit

Looking ahead, Leah can’t wait to see how the new tools take Nourish’s HR operations to the next level. Meanwhile, she has OutSail on speed dial for the next time her team needs a system update.

“Nourish is a grown-up company now, and OutSail found all the tools we needed to get to the next level. We’re excited to work with them again as we layer even more tech into our HR stack.”
